Psychotherapy for Peripartum Mental Health Concerns

You struggle out of bed, having been awakened five times a night with your newborn, and you’ve gotten maybe 3 hours of broken sleep.

You don’t know how you will face another day home alone, cluster feeding your baby and trying futilely to get him to nap in his bassinet. He screams inconsolably whenever you try to put him down, which makes you cry – again. You look at your baby and simultaneously think, I feel no connection to this baby, and I’m also not enough to care for him the way he needs.
You haven’t changed her clothes or showered in 4 days. The house is a mess and there are empty takeout containers everywhere, because you don’t have the time or energy to cook. You wonder if you will always feel this way, and if your baby would be better off without you.
You don’t have to live like this. There is help! You can find your identity as a mother – an identity that feels real and comfortable. You can reconnect with friends and family and make new connections with other mom and parent friends, as you widen your parenting village.

I offer EMDR in 50-minute weekly sessions. I also offer EMDR intensives – 2 to 4 hours of EMDR processing. This kind of intensive work allows the processing of trauma and mental health symptoms to progress even more quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! We have worked with many people who have experienced traumas of all different types. Many of them have concluded therapy feeling like they are finally living a life that is not limited by the ghosts of their past. Many of our clients have worked with other therapists for years without progress, but the switch to trauma focused treatment made all the difference in helping them finally move forward.

We work diligently with every client to be sure that they feel stabilized and prepared to begin trauma processing. The trauma therapy journey is completely individualized to each client. Everyone’s history is different, and so we must proceed at a different pace for each client. We will constantly evaluate our work together to be sure that you have the support you need to maintain your responsibilities and relationships outside of therapy.

Trauma is defined by the individual. There is no set list of experiences that qualify universally as trauma. If you have a past experience that still causes you pain or shame in the present, it is worth investigating in trauma-informed therapeutic treatment.

There is no one-size-fits-all treatment. Some clients need extensive stabilization before we begin processing specific traumas. Some clients may be ready to begin trauma treatment after only a handful of initial sessions. When we meet for the first time, we will take a full history and assess your needs specifically. At that time, we will discuss an overall plan and structure for your treatment, and we will be more able to give you an idea of the length of treatment.

Our sessions are $175/hour for individual sessions, and $200/hour for intensive sessions. We are an out of network provider for insurance companies. This means that we do not take insurance, but we can provide you with the documentation you need to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. We are happy to explain this process to you and help you navigate it.

We have a detailed explanation of what Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is and how it can help relieve the effects of trauma here. We have received advanced training in EMDR and we are  certified EMDR therapists certified by the EMDR International Association (EMDR).

We have a detailed explanation of what Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is and how it can help relieve the effects of trauma here. We are certified in CBT through the Beck Institute, founded by Dr. Aaron Beck, the creator of CBT.
